JOHANNESBURG - A 12-year-old child has been taken into custody after allegedly causing a fatal pedestrian accident that claimed the life of a 14-year-old in Brakpan in Johannesburg's East Rand.
It's understood Ekurhuleni metro police were called to the scene after a Mazda vehicle, reportedly driven by the 12-year-old child, had crashed into the wall of a house.
The child had failed to obey a stop sign and as a result also struck the 14-year-old teenage pedestrian.
Paramedics declared the teen dead on scene.
The 12-year-old child was handed over to Brakpan police in the company of his guardian.
City spokesperson Zweli Dlamini has urged parents to be more vigilant.
"A very unfortunate incident indeed, and our condolences as a city go to the family of the deceased. But at the same time it is very important that we pass this message to our communities. Let's make sure that we keep car keys safe, lets make sure that we do not give access to our cars to children below the age of the driving age. And also, people who do not have the necessary documents to drive a vehicle. "
