JOHANNESBURG - The Patriotic Alliance (PA) has announced its deputy president, Kenny Kunene, as the party’s mayoral candidate for Johannesburg.

This is despite Kunene’s current suspension pending an investigation over his suspected ties with alleged crime underworld figure Katiso “KT” Molefe.

Kunene was found in Molefe’s Sandton home when police pounced on him to arrest him for the murder of Oupa Sefoka, popularly known as DJ Sumbody

During a Facebook live last night, PA leader Gayton McKenzie announced the party’s internal investigations into Kunene are at an advanced stage.

“The investigation of the DP will probably be done, Eugene will tell us tomorrow when the investigation will be done. He (Kunene) has done very good work in the City of Joburg, and the DP will be our mayoral candidate for Joburg. We insist on that as he was a councillor. We will discuss with him that position, but the DP, we want his case to finish.”

At the same time, one month after being sworn in as a Johannesburg councillor, the PA announced that Liam Jacobs would resign from the position and become the party’s new mayoral candidate for Cape Town.

The PA's previous candidate for the metro, Raatiqah Tagodien, has been promoted to the party's national executive committee.

As a result of the new change, Jacobs will no longer be the party’s mayoral candidate for the City of Tshwane.

McKenzie also announced that Jacobs has been appointed as the party’s national youth leader.

“We are removing Liam Jacobs out of council because I think they are intimidated, and they want him to be an honorary councillor - we know there are some DA guys that are intimidated by him. We not going to let such talent sit there while we can use it elsewhere.”
