The City of Cape Town says it’s allocated trading dates for the Green Point market through the festive season.

Traders will be able to operate at the P4 location from 26 December 2025 until 2 January 2026.

The city says this is to help traders supplement their income over the festive season.

Some traders claim the city uses bylaws and other directives to make it difficult for them to trade.

Trading has previously been cancelled to accommodate sporting events at the stadium.

The city’s director for economic development and investment, Lance Greyling: "So what we did say to the traders is that we can find them a venue just outside of the precinct and the venue that we looked at was in fact the old bowling green and we did say to the traders that we could look at this venue that won’t be redlined during events but unfortunately they wanted P4. I understand why and so we went with that."

Chairperson of the Greenpoint market and president of the National Informal Trader's Alliance, Rosheda Muller, said they found that the conditions at the bowling green were not sufficient to sustain livelihoods.

"They gave us a calendar of trade and then they relayed on the calendar even. The Thursday, we got an email, no trading Sunday. Are we of nuisance value, or are we creating employment and a destination for tourists?"

The group will be meeting with city officials next week to iron out their issues.
