JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) has conceded that it needs to do better with the people who have entrusted it with their votes.
On Monday, the party brought together more than 4,000 councillors from across the country at the FNB Stadium in Soweto.

The councillors were given an action plan to improve service delivery and governance at their respective municipalities.
The Goldrush Dome at the FNB Stadium was not enough to house all the attendees, with some members not having space to sit.
The ANC has 4,929 elected ward and PR councillors across the country – far more than any other political party.
The deputy chairperson of the ANC’s local government intervention committee, Dickson Masemola, said ANC-controlled municipalities in places like Free State and North West have not performed well.
“We cannot continue to subject our people to inconsistent performances which does not resonate with the support and love the people have for the ANC. We are not just lamenting the situation; we have developed interventions.”
Masemola, who is also the deputy minister of cooperative governance and traditional affairs (COGTA), said some of the interventions at government level are withholding funding to poor-performing municipalities.
