Springbok captain Wynand Claassen’s long-time battle to save Newlands Stadium remains ongoing despite a few setbacks.
He explained that he continues to appeal to the Heritage Council to declare the stadium a heritage site, ensuring its preservation for generations to come.
"It's a national heritage site, and it should be recognised as such.”
Claassen acknowledges that the push to save Newlands has not been without its challenges, including the council's initial rejection of the application.
However, he remains optimistic, especially with the support of the community.
He argued that the stadium would be a great venue for major sporting events or even repurposed into a tourist attraction, incorporating retail and sports facilities.
It has undergone upgrades and safety improvements, earning a certificate from the Engineering Department, making it suitable and safe for all.
“We still very much believe that Newlands doesn't really belong to the Capetonians or the Western Province people. It belongs to South Africa,” he said.
