The Cape Town Minstrel Carnival Association is back in court on Monday to challenge the city’s withdrawal of approval to host the Tweede Nuwe Jaar parade on Saturday, the third of January.

The association appeared in the high court on Saturday night, where the matter was postponed to Monday.

The association said although the parade is traditionally held on the second of January, it decided to move the event to the third, as the second falls on a Friday observed as the sabbath.

The Cape Town Minstrel Carnival Association is back in the Western Cape high court on Monday.

This after the city allegedly withdrew its approval for the association to host its minstrel parade on Saturday, the third of January.

The association said its parade should not be confused with that of the Kaapse Klopse carnival association, which will take place on Monday, the fifth of January, along somerset road towards the DHL stadium.

Spokesperson Igsaan Alexander has also criticised the decision by the Kaapse Klopse to change the historical route to a shorter one along Somerset road.

"They have no right to do our culture and heritage. And our forefathers and slaves. That is how it started out. The slave route. And the historical sites and buildings all along the way," said Alexander.

The City of Cape Town said it will file opposing papers and provide comment at the appropriate time.
