CAPE TOWN - Eskom has synchronised Koeberg nuclear power station's unit 2 with the national grid after an extensive upgrade this year.
The power utility said it's a significant milestone in Eskom's generation operational recovery plan for a dependable, cost-effective and environmentally sustainable energy supply.
Eskom spokesperson, Daphne Mokwena, said that the achievement was part of an extensive programme to extend unit two’s lifespan by 20 years.
"The maintenance programme for unit 2 included the replacement of three steam generators, comprehensive inspections, and refuelling activities to ensure the reactor's continued safe and efficient performance."
Mokwena said that the enhancements aligned with Eskom’s broader strategy to secure the future of Koeberg’s reactors.
"With a 930MW contribution, unit 2 plays a significant role in Eskom’s goal to increase its capacity by 2,500MW by March 2025."
Mokwena said that both units would supply about five percent of the country's electricity, playing a vital role in reducing load shedding.
