DURBAN - The KwaZulu-Natal Public Works and Infrastructure Department says attacks on construction sites are delaying infrastructure development.
This comes after the attack of workers at a construction site in Umzinto, on the South Coast, on Thursday.
On Friday, five men appeared in the Vulamehlo Magistrates Court on extortion charges linked to the attack.
The department said that the disruption also comes at a great cost.
Spokesperson Steve Bhengu said, "Extortion targeting construction sites, be it private or government projects, hinders progress and often comes at a great loss in terms of time, money and life."
Bhengu said that this needs to be stopped.
"KZN can't continue being a province where the built environment constantly faces disruptions.”
