JOHANNESBURG - Lobby group CASAC has welcomed the decision by the Constitutional Court barring former president Jacob Zuma from running for public office at the upcoming elections.
Zuma was previously given the go-ahead to run for a seat in the National Assembly by the Electoral Court, overturning the IEC's decision to disqualify him from serving as an MP for the MK Party.
The apex court has now overturned the Electoral Court's ruling on Zuma's candidacy.

The Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution, which was admitted as a friend of the court, warned that the Electoral Court's decision to allow Zuma to run for a seat in the upcoming polls had implications for the rule of law and the separation of powers.
Head of the organisation, Lawson Naidoo: "I think Justice Theron, in reading the judgement this morning, made it clear that one needed to look at the purpose of the provision for the disqualification that it was out in the Constitution deliberately to preserve the rule of law and to preserve the dignity of the Constitution."
While the ConCourt ruled Zuma could appeal its findings to the same court, it's unclear at this stage what Zuma's plan is.
