The South African government has indicated it will decide on its next course of legal action against fugitive Pastor Shepherd Bushiri and his wife, Mary.
The state says it is currently reviewing Friday’s Malawian High Court judgement, which set aside the order to surrender the couple to South Africa for trial.
In a statement on Saturday, Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi said the government will continue to work closely with Malawian authorities to ensure justice prevails.
The Bushiri's were granted bail in 2020 pending trial but failed to comply with bail conditions; leaving South Africa.
They are facing charges of fraud, money laundering and the contravention of the Prevention of Organised Crimes Act.
While their extradition has now been set aside and the couple claims victory, Justice Ministry spokesperson Terrence Manase says South Africa will continue pursuing the case.
“Minister Kubayi has indicated that the South African government is studying the judgement and will determine the next legal course of action once a full assessment of the ruling has been concluded.” He added.
