Deputy Minister Polly Boshielo said that the disbanding of the political killings task team (PKTT) should serve as a case study on how not to manage a key state institution, like the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Boshielo stated that Minister Senzo Mchunu's directive to disband the task team should have been done with more consultation among the minister, his two deputies, and the national police commissioner.

Boshielo was responding to questions from Members of Parliament (MPs) regarding Mchunu's directive during her testimony before the parliamentary ad hoc committee investigating police corruption.

The deputy minister explained that she couldn't object to or express her views on Mchunu’s directive because the minister had executive authority and used his powers accordingly. She told committee members that she found out about the directive on social media and initially thought it was fake.

Boshielo further asserted that Mchunu’s directive could have been handled differently, and he should have provided reasons.

"The events surrounding the disbandment of PKTT serve as a case study on how not to manage a critical state national institution."

Boshielo concluded her testimony by saying she hopes the recommendations of the committee will become the blueprint for the revitalisation and restoration of the police.
