Mop-up operations are underway after severe storms battered coastal areas in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), including eThekwini and Pietermaritzburg.

The storms, bringing gale-force winds, thunder and hail, uprooted trees, damaged power lines and flooded major roads on Sunday night.

The KZN local government department said technical teams are now assessing both regions to determine the full extent of the damage.

Spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila said, “The KZN Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, through the provincial Disaster Management Centre, is working closely with the affected municipalities to restore services and clear debris. No fatalities have been reported at this stage. A comprehensive update will be provided once technical assessments are concluded.”
