Culpable homicide case opened after crash that claimed 5 lives in East London

Five people have died and 60 others injured in a crash in East London.

The Eastern Cape Department of Transport department said a VW Polo and a bus collided on the N6 on Sunday night.

The bus was carrying 60 Zimbabwean nationals who have all been hospitalised with varying injuries.

Transport department’s spokesperson, Makhaya Komisa, explained: “The case of capable homicide and reckless driving has been opened at Stutterheim Police Station.

“Transport and Community Safety MEC, Kodile Ngata, has conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wishes the injured passengers speedy recovery. The MEC has urged motorists to obey the rules of the road."

Komisa added that law enforcement agencies will investigate the cause of the crash.
