As Gauteng grapples with poor road infrastructure, the provincial Department of Roads and Transport said it has earmarked key routes across the province for maintenance under its 2026 light road rehabilitation programme.
The initiative aims to improve road safety, ease traffic congestion, and preserve critical infrastructure.
Planned work will cover Tshwane, Sedibeng, the West Rand, and the City of Johannesburg, including major routes such as the N14 Ben Schoeman, the R25 Bronkhorstspruit Road in Pretoria, and the R59 in Midvaal.
Maintenance will include pothole patching, resurfacing, pavement repairs, drainage upgrades, guardrail maintenance, and road marking.
Spokesperson Lesiba Mpya said preventative maintenance is the most cost-effective way to extend road lifespans, avoid costly reconstructions, and support economic activity.
“The department has taken a deliberate and strategic approach to prioritise key corridors and high traffic routes across all regions of Gauteng. These interventions are intended to extend the lifespan of our road infrastructure, improve road safety for all users, and support economic productivity across the province.”
Motorists are urged to take extra care in construction zones as projects are rolled out in phases across the province.
