Gauteng MEC for Finance and Economic Development, Lebogang Maile
Gauteng Finance MEC, Lebogang Maile says continued migration into the province is placing significant pressure on its annual budget.
Speaking at a media briefing on Sunday, Maile provided an update on the provincial government’s financial position, just a month before the end of the current financial year.
He said about 230,000 people migrate to Gauteng each year, including around 50,000 children who relocate to the province for schooling.
Maile added that the growing influx of people directly influences how the provincial government allocates and spends its budget.
“Every year, we have at least 50,000 learners who come from different parts of the country. When they arrive, they need more desks, learning materials and schools. This is a practical reality, and it affects us because we do not budget for an additional 50,000 children. The movement of people has a significant impact on us as a province and has a bearing on how we perform.”
