The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have officially laid a criminal complaint against forensic investigator Paul O'Sullivan for contempt of Parliament after he walked out of the ad hoc committee investigating police corruption.

The EFF laid the complaint against O'Sullivan at the Cape Town police station earlier on Friday following Thursday's dramatic turn of events when he walked out of the meeting, saying he had a flight to catch.

National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza has also noted with concern what happened during the meeting and will consider what course of action must be taken.

The EFF said O’Sullivan walked out of the ad hoc committee while still under oath and refused to continue giving evidence while before Parliament.

The party said it regards his conduct as a direct violation of the Powers, Privileges and Immunities of Parliament and Provincial Legislatures Act.

EFF committee member Leigh Ann Mathys explained the consequences of someone found guilty of the violation: “According to the Powers and Privileges Act, Section 17 is in contempt of Parliament, and it does carry a offence which is equivalent to a crime or imprisonment or both.”

Parliament spokesperson Moloto Mothapo, meanwhile, said Didiza noted the walkout with concern.

“Witnesses appearing before these committees are expected to cooperate fully with proceedings and respect the authority of Parliament.”

He said Didiza is awaiting a report from the committee, which she will consider before determining what action, if any, may be necessary.
