The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has announced that motorists should anticipate traffic disruptions and road closures in parts of the city ahead of and during the upcoming G20 Summit, which begins this Saturday.
The JMPD is assuring the public that clear traffic signage will be in place to guide motorists through the affected areas during the planned soft and full road closures.
JMPD spokesperson, Xolani Fihla, stated that significant traffic disruption is expected during peak hours:
Morning Peak: Between 7:00 and 10:00.
Evening Peak: Between 17:00 (5:00 PM) and 20:00 (8:00 PM).
Fihla confirmed that closed roads will reopen immediately once the official convoys have passed through.
Fihla detailed the type of closures being implemented:
"We'll be having soft closures on most parts of these areas, except in Nasrec, where we'll be having full closures, and the full closures will then be implemented. Actually, they have been implemented already, one of them on Golden Highway, that's between Rand Show Road and Soweto Highway. It was implemented two days ago."
Soft closures will affect most areas, likely allowing managed access until convoys approach.
Full closures are specifically in effect around Nasrec.
An existing full closure is on the Golden Highway, between Rand Show Road and Soweto highway, which began two days prior to the announcement.
