Embattled Crime Intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo claims the takedown operation at the home of Sandton businessman Katiso “KT” Molefe was deliberately not shared with the Hawks.

Khumalo told the Madlanga Commission in Pretoria that the investigation revealed a member of the Hawks, only identified as “Zungu”, was allegedly working with the Big Five cartel.

On 6 December, members of the Gauteng Counterintelligence Operations Unit and Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) conducted two simultaneous operations at the homes of Molefe and tender tycoon Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala.

The commission previously heard that members of the Hawks arrived at Molefe’s Sandhurst mansion demanding to know what was going on.

It’s alleged former Hawks boss Godfrey Lebeya instructed members to find out what was happening at Molefe’s home after it emerged that there was a possible bogus police operation taking place.

“During our investigation and intelligence collection, we had picked up that there might be those individuals from the DPCI [Hawks] environment that may be involved.”

Khumalo, who led both operations at Molefe and Matlala’s homes, elaborated further regarding the concerns about possible collusion from the side of the DPCI.

“There is an individual, a Zungu, that is from TOMS [Tactical Operations Management Section] of DPCI, that is working with the cartel, so even before the takedown we had that red flag that we need to protect the investigation from DPCI.”
