Police said that a team is being put together to investigate an attempted hit on controversial North West businessman and African National Congress (ANC)-backer, Brown Mogotsi.

A red Chevrolet sedan Mogotsi was travelling in on Monday night allegedly came under a hail of bullets by men driving a white bakkie along the N3 highway towards Vosloorus on the Eastrand.

Mogotsi’s name has featured prominently in both the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, as well as Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee, which are probing allegations of corruption in the criminal justice system.

EWN understands that the red Chevrolet sedan Mogotsi was allegedly travelling in at the time of the shooting is not the regular vehicle that he uses.

Mogotsi’s lawyers are currently talking to police about the incident that occurred late in the night.

The North West ANC-backer is currently wanted by police in connection with a search and seizure operation conducted at his business premises in October.

Police are searching for digital devices belonging to Mogotsi in relation to an ongoing investigation.

However, despite claiming he would hand over his devices to police in October, Mogotsi remains elusive, with police searching for him.

In a voice note circulating on WhatsApp, someone can be heard claiming that members of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) attended to the shooting scene and were taking Mogotsi away.

“Brown Mogotsi is here. The vehicle has been shot. JMPD is also standing off with us; I think they’re going to take him (JMPD). I’m not sure where they’re going to take him.”

EWN has approached JMPD for comment.
