The eight Grade 11 learners are accused of assaulting a Grade 10 learner on Friday last week. A video of the incident has since gone viral.

The accused were brought before the Cape Town Magistrates Court on Thursday after handing themselves in at the Milnerton Police Station.

The six accused Milnerton High School learners were released on bail after being given strict instructions by the Magistrate to stay away from the complainants in the matter. Eight learners from the school have laid criminal complaints of assault against the accused.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila detailed some of the bail conditions:

“They must not directly or indirectly contact the witnesses as well as the complainants. They must not get close to the witnesses or complainants. If they see the complainants, they must walk away.”

The accused are also not allowed to enter the school premises while the matter is before the court. The Western Cape Education Department has arranged an alternative venue for the accused to write their school exams.
