Three City of Cape Town officials have been implicated in a tender fraud investigation related to a R1.6 billion construction contract.
This follows a search and seizure operation at 26 addresses across Cape Town by the SAPS commercial crimes unit on Wednesday.
The raids were prompted by information from a whistleblower and investigations by both the City of Cape Town and the SAPS.
Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said information about alleged tender fraud related to a R1.6 billion construction contract was handed to the SAPS about a month ago.
Hill-Lewis said the contract relates to a construction tender.
"It is a construction tender. It involves a couple of directorates. It's mainly a road construction tender but also related to our urban waste management directorate."
Hill-Lewis said three City of Cape Town officials were implicated in the investigation.
"There are apparently three of our city officials, varying from relatively junior to relatively senior officials, allegedly involved in this collusion."
Police say the investigation is ongoing and investigators are not prepared to share any more information at this stage.
