CAPE TOWN - A Gauteng police officer has been sentenced to 20 years behind bars by the South Gauteng High Court for the murder of her partner
The 30-year-old Constable Courtney Madella was found guilty of killing her partner Nomalungelo Khumalo during an argument in February last year.
The court heard that Madella threw acid at her partner, badly damaging her face and body.
Khumalo died in hospital a few days later.
Independent Police Investigative Directorate spokesperson Lizzie Shuping said they welcome the sentence.
"IPID’s investigation revealed that the accused officer disposed of the acid container after the incident. She thus faced a charge of murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and defeating the ends of justice," said Shuping.
