JOHANNESBURG - Five people have died in a horrific car crash along the N2 between Amatigulu and Dokodweni in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).
The accident, which occurred on Saturday morning, involved a truck and a motor vehicle along the route.
Earlier, the department reported that three men and one woman were dead (four people) on arrival by emergency services.
It is unclear how many passengers were in both vehicles at the time of the crash.
The department said the driver of the truck remains unaccounted for. It is unclear whether he is stuck under the truck or if he fled the scene.
It added that the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) is investigating the cause of the crash.
Spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said preliminary reports from the RTI suggest that the truck, carrying sugar, slammed into the car and pushed it onto the side of the road.
“At half past 8 this morning, the MEC [Siboniso Duma] received a report from our highly efficient team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate, informing him of a horrific accident along the N2 between Amatikulu and Dokodweni. Unfortunately, five people have perished.”
Sibiya explained that Duma is saddened by the incident.
“The accident happened shortly after the MEC had issued a report, informing the people of KwaZulu-Natal and the country as a whole of a very successful multi-disciplinary roadblock that took place last night until the wee hours of the morning,” Sibiya said.
