CAPE TOWN - A taxi driver has been shot and killed along a busy main road in Kensington.
Police said the taxi, which had three passengers inside, stopped on the corner of 16th Avenue when an unidentified man boarded the vehicle.
The attacker drew his pistol and shot the driver.
In an attempt to defend himself, the driver reached for his own gun but was killed by the gun-wielding passenger.
The gunman alighted from the taxi and fled in a nearby getaway car with the victim's gun.
Police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi said the three passengers were wounded in the incident.
"The adult man was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel, whilst the injured were transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Kensington police then launched a manhunt in pursuit of those responsible for this horrific incident."
Swartbooi added that this attack is a suspected retaliation hit.
"Kensington police are investigating a murder and three counts of attempted murder. We can confirm that one male, aged 28, has since been detained and will make a court appearance in the Cape Town Central Magistrates Court once charged."
