DURBAN - A mother and her one-year-old child have died in a fire that ripped through the Kennedy Road informal settlement in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
The blaze, believed to have started from an unattended stove around midnight, destroyed over 100 homes leaving scores of residents in the cold.
The fire that swept through the densely populated community of Kennedy Road informal settlement in Durban, in KwaZulu Natal has left more than 150 people displaced.
Ethekwini municipality’s fire and emergency services said a mother and her one-year-old child sustained third-degree burns and succumbed to their injuries.
Municipal spokesperson Gugu Sisilana said so far, no further injuries have been reported.
"Disaster management teams have been notified and are attending to the scene,", said Sisilana.
The municipality is calling on the public to assist by donating essential items to help those who have lost their homes.
