Former African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee (NEC) member Tony Yengeni has been introduced as the second Deputy President for the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.

Yengeni, who for years served as an ANC member, has now joined Jacob Zuma’s party.

He will run party affairs while party Deputy President John Hlophe focuses on parliamentary work.

Zuma introduced Yengeni during the party's media briefing at its provincial office in Durban on Thursday afternoon.

Yengeni served the ANC for years after joining during the liberation struggle.

But in recent years, Yengeni’s had an acrimonious relationship with the ANC, with the party’s Secretary General Fikile Mbalula threatening to charge him for ill-discipline.

MK Party leader Jacob Zuma made the announcement: “We’ve decided to drag one of our cadres we’ve been with for years, that comrade of ours is going to join us in the leadership - the top leadership is Tony Yengeni.”

The party said Yengeni will help run all of the party's affairs.
