In a bid to regain voter confidence, the African National Congress (ANC) has once again vowed to remove and replace poor-performing elected officials.

Sunday marks the second day of the party’s national lekgotla at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg.

A political overview report presented at the lekgotla on Saturday pointed to a lack of policy implementation as one of the party’s long-standing issues.

With local government elections potentially scheduled for 2027, it’s no surprise the ANC has declared 2026 as the year to fix local government.

The country’s biggest party said it has set clear goals and timelines for its members deployed to government.

ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa said that there should be little patience for those who fail.

“Crucially, we must enforce principled and predictable consequence management for non-performance and conduct. What this should mean is that if we are given tasks and we don’t perform those tasks, in my book, there’s only one way to deal with this: you either do what you’re meant to do or move out so others can do the task. It’s a simple one.”

The party has pointed to the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality as a case study, where Mxolisi Kaunda was recalled as the mayor and replaced with Cyril Xaba.

The ANC said the decision has yielded positive results for the city.
