CAPE TOWN - The Santa Shoebox Project is urging early childhood development (ECD) centres across the country to register with the Department of Basic Education to access government support.

This comes as the government allocates R10 billion to ECD programmes, increasing the per-child daily subsidy from R17 to R24.

Santa Shoebox Project CEO Deb Zelezniak, however, said the R24 grant is still insufficient to meet the full costs of operating an ECD centre.

"The Santa Shoebox Project is looking for all barriers to entry for registration of early childhood development programs to be lifted, as many of the 42,500 ECD programmes need to be registered with the Department of Basic Education in order to qualify for the child grant, the R24 per day."
