JOHANNESBURG - Three people arrested in connection with the alleged trafficking of 26 Ethiopian nationals are now facing more charges.
The suspects were handcuffed last week after the victims were found in a house in Sandringham, north of Johannesburg.
The alleged perpetrators now face additional charges of kidnapping, extortion, and smuggling.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court on Monday.
POPCRU CALLS FOR PUNISHMENT
The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) says harsh penalties and punishment should await those who commit crimes such as human trafficking.
POPCRU said harsh penalties would also serve as a deterrent to other would-be criminals, and commended the police for their swift response that led to the rescue of the victims.
The union added that the police service needed continued investment in resources, training, and support to combat complex crimes such as human trafficking.
Popcru's Richard Mambolo urged for stronger partnerships to be fostered.
"We also call for a strengthened partnership between police, community structures, and other stakeholders to prevent such crimes and support victims. This incident underscores the critical role of collaboration in fighting human trafficking, and we remain steadfast in our support for initiatives that enhance the safety and security of South African citizens."
