CAPE TOWN - The African National Congress (ANC) has warned that it will take decisive action against members who deliberately damage the party's reputation.
Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula made the remarks on the sidelines of the ANC's visit to Robben Island in Cape Town on Wednesday.
He specifically referenced former NEC member Tony Yengeni current member and Obed Bapela, accusing them of intentionally discrediting the party.
Earlier this week, Mbalula revealed that both Yengeni and Bapela would face charges of misconduct for failing to uphold the party's standards.
ANC member, Tony Yengeni, is believed to have damaged the party's reputation by posting a series of tweets questioning decisions made by the national executive committee.
Yengeni publicly challenged the ANC's decision to hold its birthday rally at Mandela Park in Khayelitsha, an action that is thought to have been the final straw for the party.
Mbalula told journalists that he would use his powers as secretary-general to discipline those who had chosen to undermine brand ANC.
"I don't need the permission of the ANC to charge Tony Yengeni. I don't. I don't need an NEC meeting to charge the wayward behaviour of an NEC member. The NEC said I should act. I’m acting now."
Mbalula continues to label Yengeni a 'political Casanova', who has derailed from the party's values.
