JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the City of Joburg says it's deeply concerned with the future of the metro following the election of ActionSA’s Nobuhle Mthembu to the council Speaker position.
Mthembu’s rise to the legislative arm of the council was supported by the African National Congress (ANC), Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and smaller political parties during an extraordinary council meeting on Wednesday.
DA caucus leader Belinda Kaiser-Echeozonjoku says she’s not convinced changes in Joburg’s leadership will return the city to its former glory.

"As a matter of urgency, we recommend that the Joburg ANC/ActionSA/EFF/Al jama-Ah coalition charts a clear course for the city of Johannesburg. Johannesburg deserves, at the very least, a clear mandate of what it can expect from its new executive."
Kaiser-Echeozonjoku has, however, wished Mthembu a successful term in the Speaker’s office.
"The newly elected speaker has a mammoth task ahead of her, one that will be filled with challenges and continued learning. Despite the differences we have in the council chamber, we wish a successful term for the new Speaker.
We’re back in the Joburg Council today for the election of a speaker. This follows the resignation of the AIC’s Margaret Arnolds, who was appointed as Finance MMC.
