Gwamanda says will only resign once decision to recall him is made by ANC-led coalition

JOHANNESBURG - Johannesburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda says he will not heed calls to resign from office unless the parties in the African National Congress (ANC)-led coalition say so.
Earlier this week, ActionSA announced his intention to join hands with the ANC in the metro, only if Gwamanda is removed as mayor.

Gwamanda was elected to the position in May 2023 through the backing of the ANC, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Patriotic Alliance (PA) and minority parties.
Although Gwamanda feels ActionSA is trying to damage his reputation, he asserted the party cannot issue requests about who holds the city's highest position.
He said the decision to recall him from the mayoral office lies with political parties in the ANC-led coalition, rather than those in the opposition council benches.
“I’m not saying that I will not be resigning, I’m saying it’s a collective decision that will be taken not by the ANC, but by the coalition to come to a determination as to whether the assignment that I have been deployed to achieve has been achieved or I failed dismally.”
Civil society organisations including the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) and the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation have supported calls for the removal of Gwamanda as mayor.
