For many people, owning a car is seen as a major milestone, a symbol of independence, convenience and even success.
But the rise in living costs is prompting a rethink of car ownership, with industry experts saying buying a vehicle is no longer the default choice.
Sandile Ntseoane, General Manager at the Southern African Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (SAVRALA), said high interest rates, fuel prices, insurance and maintenance costs are making ownership less accessible and, in some cases, impractical.
"Over the years, we've seen that car ownership is no longer the automatic end goal... that mindset is shifting. In this high-cost environment, South Africans are rethinking whether it still makes sense or whether access to things like flexibility and predictable costs matter more.
"We're seeing rising interest rates, fuel prices, insurance... and vehicle price inflation forcing people to ask a different question these days. ‘Do I really need to own a car or do I just need access to one?’"
Ntseoane highlighted alternatives such as leasing, long-term rentals and subscription models, which offer predictable monthly costs and reduced risk.
While these options are gaining popularity, he stressed there is no one-size-fits-all solution.
Ntseoane advised consumers and businesses to base decisions on usage, risk and affordability, noting that each option (including rent-to-own) comes with its own benefits, costs and contractual considerations.
"The big shift that we're seeing has moved from asking 'do I own a car?' to 'what is the smartest way to access mobility for my lifestyle and income?'"
