As political parties begin campaigning for the upcoming local government elections, Cooperative Governance Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa has urged them to avoid resorting to violence.

Election periods are often marked by political intolerance, both within parties and between different organisations.

The 4th of November has been set as the official election date, prompting parties to ramp up their campaign efforts.

Hlabisa said that parties must show tolerance toward one another, especially as they may need to work together in municipal coalitions.

"Once elections are over, political parties will need each other. Many municipalities are likely to be hung because coalitions are here to stay. It’s the reality we must live with. So, people must start to work together to take our country forward," said Hlabisa.
