COSATU affiliates call for worker solidarity to build inclusive economy

COSATU affiliate trade unions have called for workers to unite in pursuit of a building an inclusive economy.

Members convened clad in their regalia at Mbekweni Stadium in Paarl to mark Worker's Day on Friday

Resounding calls for a decent, living wage to compete with the rising costs of living were made.

Unions met under the theme " “Workers are suffocating under a deepening cost-of-living crisis.”

Leaders in the tripartite alliance raised concerns over rising food prices, low wages and austerity measures that reduce staff and overburden workers

Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation David Mahlobo said remuneration inequalities remains a major issue.

"Issues of equality, where people who are doing the same job must be recognized in terms of remuneration. That struggle is far from being over," said Mahlobo.

Mahlobo has called on all workers to join a union in their respective sectors to unit in the struggle for economic emancipation.

Members of affiliate unions braved the cold to attend COSATU's Worker's Day rally at Mbekweni Stadium in Paarl.
While speakers addressed the socio-economic hardships workers face amid by a rising cost of living, they also highlighted strides made in post-democracy labour law.
The upcoming local government elections seemed to be the buzz word among the crowd, after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the election date for 4 November this year.
