The State is expected to wrap up its cross-examination of police captain Alfred Barker in the trial of alleged underworld gang boss Nafiz Modack on Thursday.

Barker faced tough questioning from prosecutor Blaine Lazarus about his arrest of State witness Mohamed Hanware back in December 2018.

Hanware testified that he misled Modack into believing he was bribing senior cops Jeremy Vearey and the late Charl Kinnear to secure the return of six firearms seized from Modack’s home.

Tensions rose when Lazarus questioned Barker about allegations by Hanware that he was tortured, prompting Judge Robert Henney to warn the officer to consider seeking legal advice before responding.

"The accused alleged he was tortured by you to give you a statement against other people. Photos to this effect were produced. Case therefore withdrawn. Do you want to comment on this?" Lazarus asked.

Barker responded, "That is correct, my lord."
