ANC removes Jeff Radebe as KZN convenor, appoints Mike Mabuyakhulu

After weeks of speculation, the African National Congress (ANC) has again reconfigured its KwaZulu-Natal structure, withdrawing veteran Jeff Radebe as the party’s convenor in the province.

In February last year, the ANC’s national body dissolved the KZN Provincial Executive Committee, replacing it with an Interim Task Team (PTT).

The move was a direct result of a poor showing in the 2024 elections, where party support declined sharply to a low of 17%, down from 54% in 2019.

While Radebe was initially brought in to lead the KZN task team, ANC leaders in both private and public quarters have expressed disappointment with his performance.

ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula notably criticised the PTT's pace under Radebe's leadership, likening it to a Toyota Tazz.

Earlier on Wednesday, Mbalula announced Mike Mabuyakhulu as the party’s new convenor in KZN. The transition aims to stabilise the region and intensify the party's presence on the ground.

"We have made a thorough evaluation of the province and what we needed to do," Mbalula stated. "This provincial task team will be supported with a programme of action that we are going to develop, and it will be supported by the deployment of NEC members in all the regions, on a full-time basis."
