The new Citroën Basalt has arrived in South Africa, the latest entrant into the highly competitive crossover/SUV segment.

Melinda Ferguson attended the launch and had an extended test drive on some of Joburg's very potholed roads.

She says SUV-Coupé faces down rivals the likes of the Toyota Starlet Cross, Suzuki Fronx, Nissan Magnite, Renault Kiger and Kia Sonet.

The Basalt delivers 81kW from its 2.1-litre turbocharged petrol engine and 205 Nm of torque, via a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Ferguson highlights its power, overtaking ability and smooth suspension which she reports beats some of its competitors.

She loved the look of the car, aside from wheels she feels are proportionally too small.

"It has a sportback shape, if you look at that sloping roof. I immediately said it looks like a cheaper version of the BMW X2."

The Basalt also boasts 470 litres of boot space.

When it comes to interior features, Ferguson particularly enjoyed the multifunction steering wheel which allows the operation of the audio system, along with physical buttons that manage functions like climate control.

A big plus also is the strong set of safety features which include six airbags, an advanced electronic stability programme (ESP) and a tyre pressure monitoring system.

"I absolutely love a tyre pressure monitoring system when I have to go on gravel."

The entry-level Basalt Plus comes in at R354 900, while the Max will cost you R369 900.

"And I was told by Citroën that dealerships have come up with a R40 000 discount."

Ferguson rates the Basalt at a solid eight out of ten.
