WC to reinforce Easter weekend roadblocks amid foot-and-mouth disease outbreak

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde said roadblocks will continue to control the provincial borders ahead of the Easter weekend.
He said the Western Cape government wants to limit the spread of foot-and-mouth (FMD) disease outbreak as more people and animals are expected to move in and out over the weekend.

The province acquired an additional 8,000 vaccines on Saturday in the fight against the disease.
Winde said the province is making progress in eradicating FMD.
"We have a 21-point response plan across the province, adhering to it with traffic management signage up at the border posts or entry posts to our province. We have roadblocks checking for movement of animals."
Winde added that the additional vaccines have brought the total to more than 170,000 vaccines received.
He said 121,000 doses have already been administered.
"The agricultural industry, themselves, playing a very important role in managing this virus, along with our department and the disaster management teams. This is alongside our State vets, the 29 registered private vets are also helping with this process."
