The Nkabinde inquiry into Advocate Andrew Chauke’s fitness to hold as Director of the Public Prosecution has learnt that most killings related to the conflict between the KwaMaphumulo and KwaDukuza taxi associations are still unresolved.

The inquiry is hearing evidence from a KwaMaphumulo taxi association representative.

It is probing allegations that Chauke acted outside his jurisdiction in the prosecutions of the Cato Manor cases, where several killings were carried out by police towards people in the taxi industry and there are allegations of misconduct on his part.

The Nkabinde inquiry resumed its proceedings with the chairperson of the controversial KwaMaphumulo taxi association, Siphamandla Mhlongo.

Mhlongo is before the commission to testify mainly about the taxi violence that has engulfed his taxi association and the neighbouring KwaDukuza taxi association.

He will also speak about the hits on taxi members who were allegedly carried out by members of the Cato Manor Organised Crime Unit.

In his testimony, Mhlongo alleges that most of the cases were not resolved.

“A husband was shot and killed, but the mother managed to survive, she’s the member now of the executive committee. The case was opened and in that case, one person was arrested and there was no prosecution. It is just one instance that I’m making references to.”

Mhlongo then provided the case number of one of the big cases.

“Maybe you can check for yourself what has happened in that case number CAS: 33/08/23.”

The proceedings are continuing.
