Former Cape Town teacher Iain Wares has been found guilty of indecently assaulting a former pupil known only as Stephen by the Wynberg Regional Court.

The 86-year-old was on trial for sexually assaulting the boy in 1988, when he was in Grade 5 at Rondebosch Boys’ Primary School.

Stephen testified that Wares touched him inappropriately while at school.

Wares denied the allegations, claiming he did not remember the complainant and could not have committed the offence.

After a three-year trial, the court has rejected Wares' version of events.

It found Stephen to be a credible and reliable witness, describing his testimony as truthful and consistent.

The court ruled that the State had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Sentencing has been postponed to the 13th of May.

Wares is also expected back in court next month for an extradition hearing, where he is wanted in Scotland to face similar charges.
