The Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (CODETA) is calling for calm following a second deadly shooting in Delft in less than a week.

A 50-year-old man and a woman were shot dead near the Palm taxi rank on Monday evening.

Police said the victims were travelling in a private vehicle when they were ambushed.

The incident follows last week’s shooting at the Voorbrug taxi rank, where two people linked to rival taxi associations and a bystander were killed.

CODETA chairperson Nceba Enge said the organisation is deeply saddened by the loss.

Enge said they believe this attack may be linked to taxi industry disputes.

"It's so painful that we keep losing people, but as much as we feel that pain, we are calling for calm from our members and the community at large."

Police investigations into both incidents continue.

WC GOVERNMENT STEPPING UP EFFORTS

Western Cape Community Safety MEC Anroux Marais said the government is stepping up efforts to curb ongoing taxi violence in Cape Town.

Marais said she has engaged city officials and police over interventions following two separate incidents in Delft, where four people linked to the taxi industry were killed in less than a week.

Delft is among several areas affected by persistent taxi-related violence.

Marais said increased law enforcement visibility will form part of efforts to stabilise the situation.

“We will have flying squads on the N1, N2, N7, and R300. Also, our LEAP officers and Law Enforcement and SAPS will be in areas like Nyanga and Atlantis. Also, I want to stress that our LEAP officers won't be taken away from the areas that they operate in, they will be deployed in areas such as Khayelitsha, Delft, Mitchells Plain, Philippi East, as well as Gugulethu."
