The Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) is calling for surveillance cameras to be installed at the Nyanga taxi rank following a series of violent incidents.

Nine minibuses were torched at the rank last week, the second such incident in just over a year.

Several deadly shootings have also been reported there in recent months.

Taxi operations were brought to a halt on Monday, as operators marched to the Nyanga Police Station, accusing police of delaying investigations.

CATA secretary Nkululeko Sityebi said authorities must prioritise the cases and keep operators informed.

"There must be arrests for all those people, and there must be reports that we are receiving from the police that this case is, at this stage, as we speak and not just the case has been opened, but there’s no progress.”

Western Cape Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku said installing cameras at taxi ranks is non-negotiable.

"We're going to be speaking to the City of Cape Town, and I know the city does have plans to make sure that the taxi ranks become safer, and we know that city teams will need to have that. Also, from the side of mobility, we must also look at drones."
