An off-duty law enforcement officer narrowly escaped with his life after being shot during a hijacking in Delft early on Sunday morning.

The City of Cape Town confirmed the officer is attached to the Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) in Philippi East.

City law enforcement spokesperson Wayne Dyason stated, "He sustained a gunshot wound to the stomach and is in the hospital."

Police spokesperson Wesley Twigg added that the officer’s head was also grazed by a bullet.

"Delft police registered attempted murder and hijacking cases for investigation following an incident in which an adult male was shot and robbed of his vehicle," said Twigg.
