The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry has called the medical certificate of alleged political fixer Brown Mogotsi “useless”, saying it will be considering serious actions against witnesses who do not cooperate.

Mogotsi made a brief appearance at the commission on Wednesday morning to explain his no-show on Monday.

But before he could speak, commission chairperson Mbuyiseli Madlanga made a speech about the “bothersome” pattern of witnesses falling sick before they have to testify.

Madlanga said the commission reserves the right to call in the doctors who write these sick notes and also to refer them to the country’s medical boards.

“We are not going to sit here and continue receiving useless medical certificates like the last one was and like yours appears to be.”

Mogotsi apologised to the commission for not showing up on Monday, saying he wasn’t feeling well.

“Coming back from Cape Town since Friday, I was not okay. Like you say, confidentiality of the illness, but mine, I just had a lot of pressure, more like a diarrhoea. I was so sick. I'm still not well.”

Mogotsi’s testimony has been postponed to a later date.
