The Democratic Alliance (DA), Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), and the African National Congress (ANC) secured crucial seats in the latest round of by-elections.

The DA once again secured Ward 102 in Johannesburg, which covers much of Randburg and Bryanston, with 94% of the vote.

Despite an increase in support from 71%, voter turnout remained low with just 17.6% of registered voters casting their ballots.

Bea Campbell-Cloete is the new ward councillor.

Elections analyst Wayne Sussman notes that while this is one of the bigger wards, it is a diverse voting district.

“The area of Bordeaux is relatively diverse, and in the 2024 elections, the EFF came second here.”

IFP reclaimed ward 17 in Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal, from the National Freedom Party with 59% of the vote and a voter turnout of 48.5%.

As newly elected councillor Sbusiso Ndwandwe steps up, the IFP now holds 21 seats in the Nongoma Local Municipality.

“In the rural areas, the IFP looks like they are off to a very good start in this election year,” said Sussman.

He noted that the IFP’s victory is seen as a significant blow to the NFP, which has been experiencing a downward spiral since its breakaway from the IFP.

The ANC retained its seat in the Polokwane Municipality under Ward 34 with 72% of the votes, and a 39.3% voter turnout.

Matsikinyane Freddy Makgoba is the new ANC councillor in the ward.

Despite a slight drop in support from the previous election, the ANC holds strong in the region, said Sussman.

“It shows that their support is rock solid in this part of Polokwane.”
