The Discovery Pothole Patrol continues to create jobs, lift spirits and get Johannesburg’s motorists to their destinations safely.

It was launched in 2021 in partnership with the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and the City of Johannesburg to address the city’s notorious pothole problem.

Precious Nduli, Chief Commercial Officer at Discovery Insure, says that, since its inception, the Pothole Patrol has successfully fixed over 330,000 potholes.

“They have a less than a 1% failure rate, which really speaks to this idea that we understand the frustrations that citizens face.”

Nduli explained that the team mobilises quickly, moving with heavy machinery and high heat to compact and seal potholes, ensuring they don’t return.

She added that while residents mean well by attempting to fix potholes themselves, they have inadvertently created more problems.

“It is a high-pressure environment, so there is an absolutely highly technical skill that allows the potholes to be compacted, and to be filled well and to make sure that it doesn’t come back.”

She emphasises the importance of reporting potholes through the Discovery Pothole Patrol app. Alternatively, WhatsApp ‘Hi’ to 084-POTHOLE (084 768 4653) and follow the prompts.
