International flights leaving the Cape Town International Airport have been temporarily suspended after a fire that broke out on the premises earlier on Tuesday.

Airport Company South Africa (ACSA) said incoming international flights are being diverted to alternative airports.

ACSA added that international flights that have already landed are continuing to be processed.

The fire, which has since been extinguished, has disrupted communication lines inside the airport.

EWN reporter Nokukhanya Mntambo landed at the airport amidst the chaos and describes the situation there.

"It's quite dark coming from the luggage area, going through the passage with the stores, and out of the airport into the parking lot. All the shops along that passage, except for one, are closed as a result of the power outage."

Passengers travelling on domestic flights are urged to check directly with their airlines for the latest updates.
