The cause of a fire at the Paarl provincial hospital is under investigation.

Three floors of the hospital were evacuated as a precautionary measure when the fire broke out on Tuesday.

Drakenstein Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Zulfa Peterson said the fire was quickly contained and no injuries were reported.

"By midday, firefighters had successfully contained the blaze to the day hospital section, and all patients, staff, and visitors were safely evacuated."

The fire was reportedly caused by an electric vehicle, which caught alight.

"Early indications suggest that the fire may have been started near a car parked on site. However, this will be confirmed once investigations are complete."

Peterson said emergency services will remain on the scene to secure the area.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape has praised firefighters and emergency services for ensuring that the hospital was safely evacuated.

DA Western Cape spokesperson on Health and Wellness Memory Booysen also commended hospital staff.

“While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, the professionalism and preparedness of healthcare workers and emergency responders prevented what could have been a far more serious situation."

Booysen said the officials are now assessing the damage caused by the fire.

"An assessment is currently underway to determine the extent of the damage, and hospital officials are working diligently to ensure the continued safety of patients and staff.”

Booysen said the DA encourages a speedy restoration of normal service at the hospital.
