Police in Limpopo are investigating the circumstances surrounding a crash on the N1-25 near Tobias which left a two-year-old dead on Friday.
Officials say the crash occurred just after midday Friday when two vehicles collided head-on.
Preliminary investigations indicate that reckless driving, specifically dangerous overtaking, is the likely cause of the crash.
Three people were injured in the crash, which resulted in the road being temporarily closed off to traffic.
Limpopo transport department spokesperson Matome Taueatsoala has extended its condolences to the family of the deceased.
“A Volkswagen sedan collided head-on with a Mercedes-Benz sedan, which then sideswiped a Toyota heavy motor vehicle. The collision resulted in the tragic death of a 2-year-old girl who was a passenger in the Mercedes-Benz. Additionally, one occupant from the Volkswagen sedan is critically injured, while another occupant of the Mercedes-Benz is seriously injured and one is moderately injured. The driver and another passenger of the Mercedes-Benz sustained minor injuries,” he added.
